Suffolk County Community College Alumni Association Extends Special Thanks to Alan Hahn ’91
Suffolk County Community College students, alumni, faculty and staff connected online for Alan Hahn’s interview by Radio and Television Production student Aidan Quinlan.
Mr. Hahn shared his journey from attending Suffolk County Community College to his current experiences in the media industry. A former member of the Men’s Basketball team and a student reporter for the Compass Newspaper, Suffolk provided areas to hone skills and transfer to Long Island University.
Alan shared his journey from a freelance reporter to becoming a full-time employee at Newsday. He discussed insights from the impact of technology on journalism and the importance of building a strong professional network as early as possible. Hahn noted the difference between writing news stories to publishing five books in addition to his other roles. Alan hosts The Bart & Hahn Show Weekdays at 12pm ET. on ESPN Radio, ESPN+ & the ESPN app covering emerging topics in the Sports Industry. Students learned behind the scenes ‘it’s like preparing for a test everyday’ reviewing hot topics and adjusting to developing stories.
In reflection Hahn mentioned, ‘If you were to tell me years ago, as a Suffolk student, I would be on television I would not have believed you.’ Thankfully we can catch Alan regularly on MSG Network as New York Knicks Analyst.
Alan Hahn joined MSG as a full-time studio analyst in the fall of 2011.
Since joining MSG Networks, Hahn has hosted weekly coach’s shows, such as Nothing But Knicks, and also has a pregame segment for home games based on his popular blog, the Knicks Fix. He also co-hosts the Hahn & Humpty Show on ESPN Radio, which was simulcast on MSG Networks during the summer of 2016. Hahn also contributes to MSGNetworks.com with his blog.
Prior to joining MSG Network, Hahn spent 16 years as a writer at Newsday, serving as the paper’s Knicks beat writer for five seasons before joining MSG. Hahn also covered the New York Islanders and the NHL and during his career covered every major pro sports team in New York.
Hahn is an accomplished author with five published books: Fish Sticks: The Fall and Rise of the New York Islanders (Sports Publishing LLC), 2003; Birth of a Dynasty: The 1980 New York Islanders (Sports Publishing LLC), 2004; and Bruin Redemption: The Stanley Cup Returns to Boston (F+W Media), 2011, 100 Things a Knicks Fan Should Know and Do Before They Die (Benchmark) and The New York Knicks: The Complete Illustrated History (MVP Books) in 2012.
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 26, 2022 U.S. Department of State English Language Programs Contact: ECA-Press@state.gov / Outreach@elprograms.org / 202-687-6044
Dr. Brian J. O’Hare ’98 Selected by U.S. Department of State for Prestigious English Language Teaching Fellowship
The U.S. Department of State announced the selection of Brian J. O’Hare, PhD of Honolulu, Hawaiʻi for a 10-month fellowship project training teachers and teaching English in Jordan at Petra College for Tourism and Archaeology, a branch of Al-Hussein bin Talal University. Dr. O’Hare is one of only 200 U.S. citizens selected for the 2022-2023 English Language Fellow Program.
Over the last twenty years, Dr. O’Hare has taught, mentored, and trained students and teachers in the United States and abroad. At the secondary level, he has taught ESL/Social Studies in Washington, DC and served as an Academic Dean and Head of Department for Social Studies/ESL in Hainan, China. At the tertiary level, he has been an instructor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT) in NYC and Trinity Washington University in DC, where he taught courses in anthropology, critical reading and writing, cross-cultural studies, and sociology. Recently, he was a Virtual Fellow at Vinh University of Technology Education in Vietnam and an abstract reviewer for the Viet-TESOL International Convention 2022. He earned a master’s degree in Curriculum Development and Instructional Technology with a focus in Language Education from SUNY Albany, and a doctorate degree in Applied Anthropology from Teachers College, Columbia University. At the UNESCO world heritage site of Petra, Dr. O’Hare hopes to work with university students and tour guides to improve their English language skills and assist them in building practical solutions for their economic needs with the use of cultural resource management tools.
The English Language Fellow Program is the premier opportunity for experienced teachers of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL) to enact meaningful and sustainable changes in the way that English is taught abroad, and is sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) with funding provided by the U.S. government. Through projects developed by U.S. Embassies in more than 80 countries, Fellows work directly with local teachers, students, and educational professionals to improve the quality of English language instruction offered at prestigious universities and other academic institutions.
Since 1969, the English Language Fellow Program has sent thousands of TESOL scholars and educators abroad to promote English language learning, enhance English teaching capacity, and foster mutual understanding between the U.S. and other countries through cultural exchange. On assignment, Fellows teach English, conduct teacher training, develop resources, and organize events and conferences. These projects are challenging and the teachers selected represent the best of the U.S. TESOL community. In return, the program provides professional development opportunities to help participants experience different cultures and build skills that can greatly enhance their TESOL careers back home.
English Language Fellows are counted among the more than 50,000 individuals participating in U.S. Department of State exchange programs each year. The Fellow Program is administered by the Center for Intercultural Education and Development at Georgetown University. Houston Rockets Membership Sales Executive and 2015 Suffolk County Community College graduate Bobby Mainor
Sport managers work for professional sport teams, college and university athletic departments and sport marketing firms and labor behind the players and games in a variety of business functions that make it all happen.
Born and raised in The Bronx and a die-hard New York Yankees fan, Mainor’s path to professional sports was anything but direct, “Not conventional,” as he described it. He attended colleges – including New York University and Stony Brook before finding a home at Suffolk, graduating, and earning his bachelor’s degree at Empire State College. And through it all, Mainor worked at jobs that included Hertz and L.A. Fitness and as a teacher’s assistant, among others, until he decided he wanted pursue a career he was passionate about. Professional sports.
Mainor scoured online sports professional’s job sites. “I applied for hundreds of jobs in professional sports. Internships. You name it,” Mainor said, “and got rejected left and right.”
Then, an out-of-the blue recruiting email hit Mainor’s in box. Pay dirt. Mainor completed a competitive and comprehensive interview process with hundreds of applicants and chose to work for the Houston Rockets in June 2021.
Mainor told students that he had no prior sports management experience. “I was green to all of this,” Mainor explained. “I did have sales experience and did a great deal of networking.”
Mainor described his typical day as “intense” and involves establishing networks and speaking with businesses and individuals about the Houston Rockets. “My job enables me to meet and make relationships with people I would not otherwise meet,” Mainor said.
As for the future. Mainor said he sees himself as a vice president of sales, or in the C-suite of a professional sports organization within the next 10 years. “Being able to lead an organization would be great,” he said.
“It was a pleasure to have Mr. Mainor speak to our Sport Management students about his journey into a career in professional sport,” said Chair/Professor – Health, Physical Education & Sport Management Al Heraghty.
