Suffolk County Community College Alumni Association Congratulates Alex Dzieman ’18

For Immediate Release
June 3, 2020

Suffolk, Cornell and Next Stop Stanford University

Alex Dzieman photo credit: Taylor Snyder
Alex Dzieman photo credit: Taylor Snyder

Suffolk County Community College 2018 Engineering graduate and Robert Frey Scholar Alex Dzieman graduated from Cornell University this spring and is headed to Stanford University this fall to pursue a Master of Science in Geomechanics.

While his path is now clear, Dzieman is the first to mention it wasn’t always that way. “I barely graduated,” he said, from Sag Harbor’s Pierson High School in 2014 and took a gap year working construction.

It was during his stints on construction sites that he said “I realized my opportunities would be limited without some type of formal education.”

“Suffolk gave me the opportunity to prove myself academically and allowed me to transfer and succeed in four-year institutions that would have previously rejected me,” Dzieman said.

Dzieman said his path crystallized when he was introduced to Professor Peter Maritato ’77 in his Introduction to Engineering Design class. Maritato’s first assignment had students choose what school they planned to attend after graduating Suffolk and create a plan.

Dzieman’s first choice was California Polytechnic State University, and he ultimately applied to eight engineering schools, including Ivy League, Cornell University. The Cornell application? Dzieman called it a “Hail Mary.”

The Hail Mary? Answered. Dzieman received his Cornell Engineering School acceptance the same day he was awarded a $5,000 Robert Frey Scholarship from Suffolk.

“Alex is an example of a student who focuses and organizes his own education and once again proves that students attending Suffolk County Community College can and will succeed academically as well as professionally.  With his acceptance to Stanford University he is among the top ten percent of bachelor graduating engineers in the nation. As we have had in past, Robert Gibson ’66 NASA space shuttle captain who also attended Suffolk’s Engineering program, Alex will achieve the same and greater results with his career,” said Suffolk’s Academic Chair of Engineering and Technology Peter Maritato.

Dzieman graduated from Suffolk County Community College with an A.S. in Engineering Science. He thanks all that helped him along the way, specifically the Math Learning Center and Physical Science Tutor Center.  “I can’t say enough about them,” he said.

I am #SUNYCC Social Media Campaign #SUNYstayneargofar #SUNYSFLK

sccc-2017-184x56-v2-2x

June 9, 2020

TO:               The College Community

FROM:          Louis J. Petrizzo, Interim President

SUBJECT:    I am #SUNYCC Social Media Campaign

I am pleased to share with the College community, that SUNY has launched a marketing campaign to assist in promoting enrollment in its community colleges. As students and their families consider whether to stay close to home for the fall 2020 semester in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, the campaign attempts to point out the value of staying local and attending community college.

The campaign is regionalized and includes Long Island as one of six regions where SUNY will use digital marketing and television to link potential students with their local community college.  When prospective students respond to the SUNY advertisement by clicking a link seeking further information, the student receives an automatic acknowledgement from SUNY and the community college enrollment team receives an email from SUNY requesting they complete outreach to the student.

To further bolster this campaign, SUNY has asked each community college to encourage grassroots social media generated by various community college constituencies (current students, 2020 graduates, alumni, supporters, parents, employers, faculty, administrators, and staff). To participate in supporting this campaign, constituents are asked to  create a short video or post photos that share why SUNY community colleges are valuable to them personally and/or professionally.

Please take a moment to view the attachment for all the details, and consider participating through your social media accounts (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube) using hashtags #SUNYCC & #SUNYstayneargofar & #SUNYSFLK and add the call to action: https://www.suny.edu/communitycollege

SUNY, the NYS Student Success Center & college social media accounts will be reposting from the hashtags.

If you have questions or would like further information, please contact Drew Biondo, College Director of Communications, at biondodr@sunysuffolk.edu.

Suffolk County Community College Brief June 1, 2020 & Center for Social Justice and Human Understanding

sccc-2017-184x56-v2-2x

June 1, 2020

FROM:            Louis J. Petrizzo, Interim President

Statement of the College Regarding Current Events

We join those in the College community now burdened with a heavy heart. Recent events should serve as an awakening to those of us who have slumbered through years of escalating racial tensions that challenge our nation.  It is past time now to encourage our friends, neighbors, all levels of government officials, faculty, staff and students, of all races, colors and backgrounds, to step forward to condemn racism in all its forms.

We have come together here at Suffolk County Community College because we care about our students and we firmly believe that education is the best path to follow in order to transform lives and communities.  Today, at this time in our history, we need to issue another message—one that says such transformation can only take place where dignity lives, where fairness is supreme, where equity and inclusion are fostered and protected.  In our small corner of the world, our College must say these will be our principles to live by.

We must agree to act in unity.  We must rally our internal community and challenge those who can be motivated to join in the effort to advance our nation away from intolerance and injustice.  Starting here and now.  We must enlist broad based support, developed through frank and honest conversation, if we hope to ever impact the underlying realities that torment so many.  Policy reform and enforced change are tasks for all of us to embrace and demand.

Say no to violence but also say no to harassment of the innocent. Say no to being subjected to hate because of your skin color—no matter the color. Speak up in peaceful protest to honor the life and legacy of those lives lost and those whose lives have been filled with injustice.  A great nation cannot be sustained upon the damaged bedrock that we have seen exposed countless times, over and over again.

We are ahead of many institutions.  Our campus structure of multicultural affairs, and our staff charged to lead our diversity and inclusion efforts have been developed to assist us.  Likewise, our Center for Social Justice and Human Understanding is prepared to assist us.  We have committees, taskforces, and mentors in place to assist us. We have students who are energized.  Thankfully, through the personal efforts of many, we have already created a space where all can feel safe.  Now we must address the frustration and emotions they are grappling with.

Whole communities are suffering and waiting for action.  We stand in support of them all.  We must endorse a commitment to push for freedom and justice, to rebuke bias and refute prejudice.  Our institution cannot and will not stand by.  We will work collectively and civilly to chart a path toward justice for all.  Most importantly, we are and must be willing to stand at the forefront of such an effort.

Statement on the Recent Passing of George Floyd

The Center for Social Justice and Human Understanding, Inc. strongly condemns the death of George Floyd at the hands of some members of law enforcement in Minneapolis, Minnesota this week.

Following the recent deaths of Breonna Taylor and Ahmaud Arbery, and countless others, we must take action to stop the intentional or unintentional killing of unarmed Black Americans.

All Americans must take ownership of the pervasive racial discrimination that exists in our nation and move forward collectively to ensure that justice prevails. No one can be silent. Rather, every one of us needs to be courageous, confront bigotry where it exists, and work to build a world where healing can begin.

“If you are neutral in situations of injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor.”

– Desmond Tutu

Congratulations Class of 2020 #SUNYSFLK #SCCCAlumni

sccc-2017-184x56-v2-2x

Congratulations Suffolk County Community College

2020 graduates!

We are so proud of our students as they complete their SUNY Suffolk experience and graduate from our exceptional college.

As a result of the current health crisis, our 2020 Commencement Ceremony has been postponed. However, we realize the importance of this milestone and we do not want this achievement to go unrecognized during the time when we would normally host this celebration. This site is dedicated to celebrating our entire 2020 class and we look forward to rescheduling this event when we are allowed to safely gather together.

Be sure to click on the message from Interim President Louis Petrizzo, in order to view a photographic student retrospective for 2020.

Once again, congratulations to Suffolk’s class of 2020. Go Sharks!
