3/31/22 Suffolk County Community College 5th Annual Take Back the Night

Suffolk County Community College 5th Annual Take Back the Night

Sponsored by the Office of Campus Activities

7PM Thursday March 31 at Michael J. Grant Campus Sagtikos Building Van Nostrand Theatre (map)

Join us to support Take Back the Night as we march against violence.

For the past few years, the College has hosted Take Back The Night (TBTN), a nationwide event that provides a space for sharing resources and providing support for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. TBTN brings awareness to the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault in all forms by empowering survivors with hope, inspiration, support and resources to begin healing from trauma and to also educate our peers/audience/colleagues/viewers on how they can have a role in all of that. We accomplish the goal by having teams that coordinate engagement projects that include Lantern Bags, Clothesline Project, Painted Rocks, & Paper Butterflies – each of these projects encourages people to write messages of empowerment, inspiration, and support for survivors through both the fall and spring semesters leading up to the actual event which will be March 31, 2022! There is always room for creativity and we welcome any and all people who want to be involved.

Suffolk County Community College Recognized by Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society for Membership Development

Suffolk County Community College has been recognized by the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society (PTK) with a REACH (Recognizing Excellence in Acceptance and Completion with Honors) Reward, the fifth consecutive year the College has been recognized for its ability to enroll eligible students in the prestigious group. Suffolk was among 464 PTK chapters recognized for their membership growth.

“For five consecutive years, Suffolk’s PTK Chapter has distinguished itself as one of the region’s most decorated thanks to the enthusiasm and support of our outstanding students and advisors,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue.

In 2021, 328 students accepted membership in Suffolk’s Alpha Zeta Nu chapter of PTK.

REACH Reward chapters receive special recognition in the form of Phi Theta Kappa graduation stoles – Suffolk garnered 11 in total – that are worn by graduates to signify their membership in PTK.

A full 91 percent of Phi Theta Kappa members will complete an associate degree or transfer to a four-year college, compared to just 31 percent of students nationally, according to PTK, and members have access to millions of dollars in scholarships — $1million in competitive scholarships through the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation and more than $246 million in transfer scholarships to over 850 four-year colleges.
