Suffolk’s Campuses Awarded Prestigious Tree Campus Designation by Arbor Day Foundation

Suffolk County Community College students plant a tree on the college's Michael J. Grant Campus on Earth Day. All three of Suffolk's campuses have been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as 2018 Tree Campus USA members.

Suffolk County Community College’s three campuses have been recognized by the Arbor Day Foundation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation as 2018 Tree Campus USA members.

The Tree Campus USA® recognition by the Arbor Day Foundation recognizes the college’s commitment to effective urban forest management. This marks the third consecutive year that the Eastern Campus has been designated, and the second year the Ammerman and Michael J. Grant Campuses have received the prestigious award.

The Tree Campus USA program honors colleges and universities for effective campus forest management and for engaging staff and students in conservation goals. Suffolk County Community College achieved the title by meeting Tree Campus USA’s five standards, which include maintaining a tree advisory committee, a campus tree-care plan, dedicated annual expenditures for its campus tree program, an Arbor Day observance and student service-learning project.

Currently there are 364 campuses across the United States with this recognition. The Arbor Day Foundation has helped campuses throughout the country plant thousands of trees, and Tree Campus USA colleges and universities invested more than $51 million in campus forest management last year. More information about the program is available at: arborday.org/TreeCampusUSA.

The Suffolk County Community College Office of Sustainability thanks the college president, the campus executive deans, the campus directors of plant operations and the campus steering committees (listed below) for their commitment and hard work in achieving this important designation.
