Helping to Make an Education Without Limits Possible

Thank you for your interest in creating a positive and lasting impact on future generations of Suffolk County Community College students! The college, under the leadership of President Edward Bonahue, has created a plan for raising critical financial support for students who need a helping hand to cover the costs associated with reaching their academic aspirations and career dreams.

Working together to achieve this strategic imperative, the College and its Foundation have launched the Education Without Limits Campaign. As a valued member of our community of friends, you already believe in the importance of public higher education. Now, we hope you will continue to champion our institutional mission by supporting this campaign.

We encourage you to learn more about the meaningful ways in which the College is transforming the lives of families and neighbors across Suffolk County.

Education Without Limits Campaign Supports Students in Need

Suffolk County Community College donors, students, alumni, faculty, staff and elected officials – nearly 200 in all – helped kick off the college foundation’s Education Without Limits campaign.

Suffolk County Community College donors, students, alumni, faculty, staff and elected officials – nearly 200 in all – helped kick off the college foundation’s Education Without Limits campaign that will support students by raising critical financial support for those who need a helping hand to cover higher education related costs and help them achieve their academic and career goals.

The luncheon was hosted by the all-volunteer Board of Directors of the Suffolk Community College Foundation, whose mission is to support student access to quality education and vocational skill training by providing scholarships, emergency loans and funding for program development. Additionally, the Foundation engages alumni to maintain their connection to the college, to support foundation events, philanthropy, and student mentorship and internship opportunities.

“We are excited to host this kick-off luncheon to raise awareness and raise scholarship money to support our students,” said Suffolk County Community College President Dr. Edward Bonahue, who outlined the program goals.

“Our campaign priority areas,” Bonahue explained, are

  • Scholarships: we want to increase the number of scholarship opportunities
  • Hardship funds: to support students faced with a sudden emergency or unforeseen circumstance that results in an immediate financial need.
  • Naming opportunities: that allow donors to recognize people and/or organizations with meaningful ties to the College and
  • Academic Program Enhancements: to provide students with enriched experiences customized to reflect the interests of the donor.

Bonahue explained that Suffolk County Community College has consistently had the lowest tuition of any college or university on Long Island, but noted that 70% of the matriculated students are eligible to receive some form of financial assistance.

“Even with generous financial aid, our full-time students tend to have unmet funding needs of more than $1,800 per year,” Bonahue said. “The fact that a majority of our students struggle to pay for the full cost of a community college education motivates us to focus on these priorities.”

“Every student deserves the opportunity to pursue a college education,” Bonahue said, “regardless of their financial background. We are grateful for the support of all of you, our donors, industry supporters and policy makers who make the many scholarships we offer, possible. Your generosity helps our students succeed and achieve their educational and career goals,” he said. “Please be a messenger and an advocate as we share our campaign priorities, and tell everyone you know that educational success starts at Suffolk.”

“Removing the limitations students face when considering a college education is our goal”, explained Dr. Sylvia A. Diaz, LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation.  “The biggest limitation is a student’s ability to afford college and we’re doing everything we can to maintain Suffolk’s low costs and provide support to those who need assistance along their individual pathways to success.”

“We are incredibly grateful to the sponsors and donors to the event including National Grid, Amazon and Giuseppe A. Nigro Lodge #2234 of the Sons & Daughters of Italy America,” said Diaz. “Every dollar we raise is shared with students to make the college experience more affordable, preparing students to enter their chosen career fields with little or no debt.”

3/31/22 Suffolk County Community College 5th Annual Take Back the Night

Suffolk County Community College 5th Annual Take Back the Night

Sponsored by the Office of Campus Activities

7PM Thursday March 31 at Michael J. Grant Campus Sagtikos Building Van Nostrand Theatre (map)

Join us to support Take Back the Night as we march against violence.

For the past few years, the College has hosted Take Back The Night (TBTN), a nationwide event that provides a space for sharing resources and providing support for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. TBTN brings awareness to the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault in all forms by empowering survivors with hope, inspiration, support and resources to begin healing from trauma and to also educate our peers/audience/colleagues/viewers on how they can have a role in all of that. We accomplish the goal by having teams that coordinate engagement projects that include Lantern Bags, Clothesline Project, Painted Rocks, & Paper Butterflies – each of these projects encourages people to write messages of empowerment, inspiration, and support for survivors through both the fall and spring semesters leading up to the actual event which will be March 31, 2022! There is always room for creativity and we welcome any and all people who want to be involved.

Persevering Through a Pandemic: Giving Thanks to the College Community

Shining On How Essential Employees and the College Community
Pulled Together to Persevere Through a Pandemic

It was just over one year ago that, as a result of the rapid spread of the coronavirus, the College went on pause and took a series of historic steps to protect our community. While many employees began to work from their homes, others remained working on campus to maintain the viability of our institution. It is an honor to now take the time to reflect on the overwhelming contributions of an entire college community and we invite you to read the following chronicle that documents these essential efforts.

We acknowledge the professional and personal difficulties that so many colleagues had to endure this past year – and we remain deeply grateful and proud of our faculty, staff and administrators.

There are many different ways you can be involved in Take Back the Night and one of the ways you can is to sign up as a virtual marcher and get involved in our engagement projects.

A snippet version of TBTN would be that our focus with this event at the college is to bring awareness to the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault in all forms by empowering survivors with hope, inspiration, support and resources to begin healing from trauma and to also educate our peers/audience/colleagues/viewers on how they can have a role in all of that. We accomplish the goal by having teams that coordinate engagement projects that include Lantern Bags, Painted Rocks, & Paper Butterflies – each of these projects encourages people to write messages of empowerment, inspiration, and support for survivors through both the fall and spring semesters leading up to the actual event which will be April 23rd 2021!

There is always room for creativity and we welcome any and all people who want to be involved in planning and executing this because it literally takes a village to make this all come together.
