Suffolk Credit Union awards college scholarships to Suffolk County Community College students

Suffolk Credit Union presented college scholarships totaling $37,500 to nine local students attending Suffolk County Community College this fall. The award ceremony was held on August 16 at the credit union’s Medford branch.

This year, Ashley Bove of Holbrook received a $6,275 scholarship from the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship, which was matched by Suffolk Credit Union for a total of $12,550. Edward Freudenberg of Yaphank was awarded $6,275 by Suffolk Credit Union in honor of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship.

Suffolk Credit Union Achievement Scholarships ranging from $2,150-$6,275 were awarded to Robert Cronin (Aquebogue), Hannah Walsh (Dix Hills), Arshiyan Khan (Selden), Alicia Anthony (Dix Hills), Cristal Lainez-Pixtum (Wyandanch), Amy Boos (Brentwood) and Sun Ji Lee (Commack).

“These scholarships are a result of an ongoing partnership between our credit union and the Suffolk Community College Foundation to help people throughout our communities achieve their educational and career goals,” said Michele Dean, CEO & President, Suffolk Credit Union. “By alleviating the cost of college for these hardworking students and their families, we position them for financial stability and empower their future success.”

Suffolk Federal Credit Union Achievement Scholarships

Suffolk Federal Credit Union awarded nine scholarships totaling $37,500 to local students who are attending Suffolk County Community College this fall at an August 31 award ceremony.

“Since partnering with the college three years ago, we are proud to have sponsored 23 scholarships totaling $93,000,” said Michele Dean, CEO & President, Suffolk Federal Credit Union. “By easing the financial burden of college costs, we help families in our communities as well as students—freeing up resources for other important goals.”

This year, Skyla Fabbricante of East Northport received a $6,275 scholarship from the L.T. Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship, which was matched by Suffolk Federal for a total of $12,550. Daniel Paesano (Sound Beach) was awarded $6,275 by Suffolk Federal in honor of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship.

Suffolk Federal Credit Union Achievement Scholarships ranging from $2,150-$6,275 were awarded to Christina Boles (Brentwood), Kristin Squire (Islip), Rachel Lee (Middle Island), Alyssia Furchert (Blue Point), Leslie Bardales Vera (Selden), Ian Fischer (Stony Brook) and Jonathan Mata (Riverhead).

The scholarships are a result of an ongoing partnership between Suffolk Federal and the Suffolk Community College Foundation to help people throughout our communities achieve their dreams. Award recipients were selected based on their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community involvement and essays.

“This scholarship program reflects Suffolk Federal Credit Union’s deep commitment to helping young people and families throughout Long Island. The recipients clearly have demonstrated the drive and discipline to succeed,” said Dr. Edward Bonahue, president of Suffolk County Community College.

According to Sylvia A. Diaz, PhD, LMSW, Executive Director, Suffolk Community College Foundation, “It is an honor to continue this partnership with Suffolk Federal, which has a long-standing reputation as a community-focused credit union. The scholarships are a meaningful way to acknowledge these deserving students’ academic achievements and community service.”

Suffolk Federal Awards $30,000 in College Scholarships For Local Students to Attend Suffolk County Community College

Suffolk Federal recently awarded $30,000 in college scholarships ($5,000 each) to six deserving high-school seniors who will be attending Suffolk County Community College.

“Supporting our younger generation to become productive community members by providing financial assistance as they undertake their college experience is an important focus for Suffolk Federal” explains Ralph D. Spencer Jr., President and CEO of Suffolk Federal. “We are happy to know that the scholarships awarded by Suffolk Federal will help to alleviate some of the student’s financial burden, so they can focus on their future educational and career goals.” Student w Check.png

From the $30,000, four of the scholarship award recipients received $5,000 each as part of the Suffolk Federal Scholarship.  In addition, one student, Amber Leon, received an additional $5,000 scholarship provided by the LT Michael P. Murphy Memorial Scholarship Foundation, which was matched by Suffolk Federal for a total of $10,000. Also, William Clifford received $5,000 as part of the Michael E. Reilly Foundation Memorial Scholarship for Excellence in Fire Science and Emergency Medical Technology which is awarded to a student enrolled in a Fire Protection Technology program at Suffolk County Community College.

Recipients were judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular and community activities as well as the quality of written essays.

The students who received scholarships are:

·       Amber Leon (Ridge)

·       Samantha Varone (Centereach)

·       Nicole Migliano (Selden)

·       Gabrielle Cerney (Manorville)

·       Jaime Cusmano (Centereach)

This year’s scholarships are being provided as a result of a new partnership between Suffolk Federal and the Suffolk Community College Foundation.

“The importance of giving to others can’t be understated and that’s because the secret to living is giving,” said Belinda Alvarez-Groneman, chairperson, Suffolk Community College Foundation. “I am thrilled that Suffolk Federal and the Suffolk Community College Foundation have partnered to recognize and support some of the most promising young people in Suffolk County with these generous scholarships.”

Added Sylvia A. Diaz, PhD, LMSW, executive director of the Suffolk Community College Foundation, “Today is a celebration of community excellence. Suffolk Federal shared incredibly generous scholarship opportunities for the students of Suffolk County Community College and awarding scholarships to promising students is one of our favorite things to do during the academic year. These students are actively involved in the life of their community and each has a record of volunteer service to their neighbors, extracurricular activity in their schools and academic excellence.”

This year, academic scholarship opportunities totaled $35,000, an increase from the $20,000 which were awarded by Suffolk Federal last year.

“Suffolk Federal’s funding of these scholarships demonstrates in a powerful way their commitment to the young men and woman of Suffolk County and to the societal benefits that flow from an educated and trained workforce. So, thank you Suffolk Federal,” added Suffolk County Community College Executive Vice President Louis Petrizzo.
