Suffolk County Community College announced today that Joseph Gonzalez has been selected as one of 20 college students nationwide named to the prestigious 2024 All-USA Academic Team. Selected from more than 2,200 nominees, Mr. Gonzalez will receive a $5,000 scholarship. He will also be recognized during the American Association of Community Colleges’ (AACC) annual convention in Louisville, KY in April.

Gonzalez was recognized for his academic achievements, campus and community engagement and overall leadership. A Liberal Arts-History major from West Babylon, NY, he excels with a 4.0 GPA and consecutive Dean’s List recognition for the last two years. He holds key leadership positions, including PTK Chapter President, President of Student Veterans of America, Honors Club President, and History Club Vice President. Gonzalez is a Get There From Here scholar and an Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) Tutor.

“One cornerstone of Suffolk County Community College’s dedication to excellence is fostering an academically rigorous environment for our students and avenues in which they can excel,” said Dr. Edward Bonahue, President of Suffolk County Community College. “We take great pride in Joseph’s achievements and applaud him for his perseverance, dedication, and remarkable contributions to both academic and community service endeavors.”

The All-USA program is among the nation’s premier academic honors for students pursuing an associate degree. The program, sponsored by education technology provider Cengage in collaboration with Phi Theta Kappa, also honors students who leverage their community college experience to better themselves, improve their schools and impact their communities.

The PTK All-USA Community College Academic Team seeks to recognize excellent students from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Students must excel in the classroom, demonstrate the intellectual curiosity to pursue academic, career and cultural enrichment outside the classroom, and show evidence of substantial development of talents in academic and technical education and an ability to share this development with others.

Suffolk County Community College’s Sagtikos Art Gallery on the Michael J. Grant Campus in Brentwood Hosts the Work of Artist Brianna L. Hernández

Suffolk County Community College’s Sagtikos Art Gallery will host artist Brianna L. Hernández through March 15, 2024. A reception and artist talk will be held on Tuesday, February 26, 2024 from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Gallery hours are: Monday -Thursday 12 noon – 4 p.m.

Intertwined: Facets of Grief and Mourning visualizes the anticipatory grief of caregiving and reimagined end-of-life planning through performative videos and biodegradable sculptures. Drawn from Hernández’s series Anticipatory | Después, each featured video shares the physical and emotional state of the dying, the caregiver, and at times the two concurrently. Ranging from fast and aggressive dance-like movement to slow and meditative contemplation, the enacted scenes capture a range of emotions and thought processes of understanding and untangling the intertwined traumas of caregiving and acute grief. Integrated within and surrounding the videos are sculptural works from Aquí Descansamos, burial vessels including caskets, urns, and shrouds crafted from organic, ephemeral materials such as moss, soap, sand, seaweed, and beeswax. Introducing the elements of whimsy and humor into funerary artifacts, Hernández invites visitors to consider end-of-life planning as an opportunity for empowerment.

Blending these series together, Hernández presents a nonlinear and nuanced relationship to the topic of death that holds space for pain, remembrance, joy of living, and love for those who have died.

Hernández states that while we will all eventually experience the pains of loss, preparing for the logistics of death and nurturing supportive communities for grievers can provide comfort and lessen the unnecessary stressors attached to loss.

Brianna L. Hernándezis a Chicana artist, curator, and death doula guided bysocially-engaged practices. In the studio, Hernández creates multi-media installations focused on end-of-life care, grief, and mourning rituals based on lived experience, cultural research, and collaborations with peers including death education workshops. She proudly serves as Director of Curation and Board Secretary of Ma’s House & BIPOC Art Studio on the Shinnecock Indian Reservation in Southampton, New York and as Assistant Curator at the Parrish Art Museum in Watermill, NY. Additionally, Ms. Hernandez is the Board Treasurer at Walker’s Point Center for the Arts in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and Committee Member for the Gente Chicana/SOYmos Chicanos Arts Fund of the Greater Milwaukee Foundation.

Suffolk County Community College Alumni Connect Rubi Catalan & Milton Farez

Milton and Rubi met at Suffolk County Community College Eastern campus in the Spring of 2014 during Milton’s last semester and Rubi’s first semester. The two met while participating in the Association of Latin American Students (ALAS) Club. During that semester the two began to meet each other, and it didn’t take long for them to notice how compatible they were. When Milton first asked Rubi on a date, their similarities continued to reveal themselves.

After graduating from Suffolk County Community College, and as fate had it planned both moved on to finish their bachelor’s degree at Long Island University, CW Post Campus. The couple continued through college together, through all the late study nights, the midnight pizza slices, midterm weeks, finals weeks, and finally graduation. They did everything together, taking classes, studying together, exploring campus, and even finding their first jobs together. Throughout the years the couple did a lot of growing and celebrating together. They both helped and supported each other get through school and achieve all their goals.

Rubi mentioned “I don’t think my college experience would have been as good as it was if I didn’t have him, we got to celebrate so many crucial milestones together”. As the couple continues to build their future together, their college experience holds a special place in their heart. Both remain connected with Suffolk County Community College and volunteer time when possible.

The two tied the knot in September 2023 and continue to share their love for each other, celebrating their first Valentine’s Day as a married couple.
